Mapping the literary and cultural geography of London

NovelTM Partner the Literary Lab at Stanford University has released the 13th in its series of pamphlets. In “The Emotions of London,” Ryan Heuser, Franco Moretti and Erik Steiner break ground in a new field of inquiry for the Lab: literary and cultural geography. Working on a corpus of 5,000 novels penned between 1700 and 1900, the pamphlet charts the uneven development of social spaces and fictional structures, bringing to light the long-term connection between emotion and class in narrative representations of London.
