NovelTM is very excited to be hosting the second annual workshop on text mining the novel. We are welcoming over 20 digital humanists, students, and industry partners from the U.S. and Canada to Montreal for two days of engaged discussion. Our focus this year is on the question of genre: what makes novels unique as a form of writing? How coherent are these loose-baggy monsters (in Henry James’ words) when compared with other forms of imaginative or documentary writing? And what kinds of social roles have novels assumed over the past two centuries? By using computational techniques to address these questions and others like them, we are interested as much in the answers we find as the insights we gain about how computation itself changes our understanding of texts. We look forward to sharing the results of our conversations in writing in the coming months.
